A fire tore through a multi-use building in Essex County, displacing several families.

The fire broke out inside the building on the 300 block of Sussex Avenue in Newark around 5:30 a.m. Friday. It took firefighters several hours to get the blaze under control.

Witnesses say that the smoke was so thick in the area that the Sussex Avenue Renew School had to close for the day.

No injuries were reported.
