Police say a pedestrian was killed and a state trooper was injured in a crash Thursday on the Meadowbrook State Parkway.
Police were investigating a northbound one-car crash just before noon in the area of Exit M2, near Zeckendorf Boulevard.
While police were at that scene, officials say another car, driven by 31-year-old Brett Belferder, of Wantagh, hit and killed a pedestrian a short distance away. Police identified the pedestrian as 39-year-old Michael Patterson, of Freeport.
After hitting Patterson, police say Belferder then crashed into the vehicles belonging to a state trooper and Nassau officer at the first scene.
The state trooper suffered minor injuries. Sources say the Nassau officer was not in the vehicle when it was hit.
News 12 is told that the Nassau officer jumped into an ambulance to take Belferder to a hospital where he was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.
There was no word on whether Thursday's poor weather played a role in the crash.
