Residents are lending a helping hand on Martin Luther King Jr. Day by giving back to those in need.

Many people are expected to turn out at the Food Bank for New York City's warehouse in Hunts Point to help box up hundreds of meals.

Volunteers braved the frigid temperatures to pack up items, like canned and dry food, in their 90,000-square foot warehouse. Those goods will then be delivered across the five boroughs, including to families and federal workers affected by the government shutdown.

Federal employees or their families can show up to one of the designates distribution sites with their identification. Those official sites will soon be announced on Food Banks' Instagram page. This  is the fifth year of the event and organizers say this year is particularly important.

After everything is packed up and ready to go, the meals will be delivered starting Tuesday.

The Food Bank says it is always looking for volunteers.
