Residents at the Pink Houses in Brownsville are relieved after their mailbox was finally repaired.
Tenants of the  Linden Boulevard building say the mailbox was broken since at least October. They were forced to go to their closest post office where they could only pick up their mail twice a week.
The problem only affected the sixth, seventh and eighth floors of the building, but the whole building houses elderly people
Residents how live on those floors tell News 12 they had reached out to elected officials, to NYCHA directly, to 311 and to the U.S. Postal Service to get answers but the problem continued.
News 12 Brooklyn reached out to both NYCHA and USPS on Wednesday and within hours the lock was replaced.
USPS told News 12 that it is NYCHA's responsibility to maintain the mailboxes while USPS is in charge of the lock.
In a statement, they said in part, "When a delivery becomes unsafe, we suspect that delivery, notify the building management and allow those residents to pick up their mail at their local post office."
NYCHA says that a worker had checked out the mailboxes Wednesday afternoon and they are now operational.
Some tenants say they are only now getting their mail from the holidays.
It is unclear whether the mailbox had been broken or if the lock had not been installed in a timely manner.
