Police: Woman arrested in connection to fatal Gravesend hit-and-run
A Brooklyn woman has been arrested in connection to the hit-and-run that killed a bagel store employee in Gravesend.
Police say 55-year-old Susan Liebowitz of Brighton Beach was arrested Wednesday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.
Police say Liebowitz’s white Ford Econoline van ran down 57-year-old Francine LaBarbara at the intersection of West Second Street and Avenue Y Tuesday.
Investigators say Liebowitz turned herself in to the 60th Precinct late Tuesday night.
LaBarbara worked at The Bagel Store in Williamsburg and is credited with being the driving force behind their "rainbow bagel" going viral. She leaves behind two teenage sons.
Coworkers from The Bagel Store lit candles in her honor. News 12 is told she was on her way home from the grocery store when she was struck.
Police say the driver was turning left off West 2nd Street on to Avenue Y when he hit her. Police say the driver never stopped.
Community leaders were at the scene of the fatal crash Wednesday, calling for change at the intersection of West 2nd and Avenue Y. They are calling for an overall redesign of the intersection, but also for the addition of speed cameras across the city.
