A group of students from Ocean County are hoping to restore some Christmas magic to some Morris County first-graders.

A classroom of 6-year-olds from Montville almost had Christmas ruined for them when a substitute teacher told them that Santa Claus wasn’t real. It left many of the students devastated.

This led a group of girls from Toms River High School East to put pen to paper and write a collection of personalized letters acting as Santa’s elves.

“We have different holiday stickers … We always throw glitter in the envelopes so when they open it, that’s just another magical factor,” says Julia Zulin.

“Being able to give them back the spirit that they had once before this whole situation happened is just an amazing feeling,” says Mallory Tonra.

The girls’ teacher says that she is very proud of their effort.

“They exceed my expectations every single day,” says teacher Casey Daniel.

A spokesperson for the Montville School District says that they are grateful for the gesture.

"It is a very kind and generous act for the students in Toms River to want to reach out to our Cedar Hill students.  If the letters are received we will notify the parents that they may pick up a letter for their child in the school's main office.  We would not distribute the letters to the students in the classroom setting,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

The substitute teacher who made the comments about Santa was asked not to come back.
