The 42nd Precinct held their first annual tree lighting event Wednesday night.
The first-time event brought out many from the community on the cold evening as they sang Christmas carols, enjoyed free hot chocolate and of course the lighting of the tree.
"We couldn't have done this by ourselves. We had many people help out. The MTA police, Morris High School, P.S. 212X, they all participated as well as politicians. The community came together as one for a time-honored tradition," says Deputy Inspector Ernest Morales.
The precinct says they hope the tree lighting is the start of a new tradition for the Melrose community.
