Bloomfield police say that they are on the hunt of a group of thieves who stole several motorcycles from a luxury apartment garage.
Public Safety Director Sam DeMaio says that the group was organized and seemed to know exactly where the motorcycles were. The act was caught on surveillance camera.
“They were very quick, in and out of the garage,” DeMaio says.
The thefts happened at the Oakes Pond apartment complex in the early morning hours of Nov. 21.
"Two white vans and a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck pull into the underground garage area and seemed to be very organized,” says DeMaio. "We see what we believe to be three males all with black hoodies on and masked."
DeMaio says that three other men stayed with getaway vehicles during the thefts.
The video shows two of the men struggling to take away a Harley Davidson motorcycle. They are seen pulling on the steering wheel to break the lock before they rolled it out and into the van.
News 12 New Jersey has learned that the motorcycles had wheel locks and alarms. Some of the bikes were pinned between a wall and a car, but were stolen anyway.
Some of the complex’s tenants say that the community isn’t gated off.
“People can drive in and see who comes and goes. And some people do have expensive motorcycles and cars so they know this could be a target,” says Ed Iskra.
A spokesperson for Oakes Pond says that the property managers have hired a security firm to patrol the complex to stop any future thefts.
Police say that they believe that the bikes were stolen for resale and not for parts. They are asking anyone who may have information about the thefts to give them a call.
