Ex-Dept. of Investigation head releases bombshell statement over firing

The former commissioner of the Department of Investigation released a bombshell statement accusing the mayor and top staff members of pressuring him to shut down or curtail investigations.
Mayor Bill de Blasio fired Mark Peters Saturday over claims he abused his power.
Mark Peters wrote a letter to the City Council to explain his side of the story. In the letter, he details encounters with the mayor in which he says he was pressured to not issue certain reports, including ones on lead paint in NYCHA complexes and the Child Welfare System.
Mayor de Blasio released a statement in response to the allegations that says in part, "The suggestion that anyone at City Hall, including the mayor, tried to stop any DOI report is entirely false. The mayor says Peters deliberately made misleading statements to the City Council.
Margaret Garnett was nominated to replace Peters as commissioner. Mayor de Blasio called her the most qualified, independent person to lead the DOI and restore credibility to its important work. Garnett's nomination must be approved by the City Council.
