The village of Lynbrook has told the developer of a controversial apartment complex project that its proposal does not fit in with the downtown area.
Many residents rallied Monday morning outside Village Hall, showing their opposition to the proposed six-story, 200-unit apartment building that would have been built on top of an existing lot near the Lynbrook train station.
Residents say there was so much controversy surrounding the project that the mayor canceled three informational meetings about the proposed development. Some say the building would have had an impact on traffic, schools and would have been an overdevelopment of the village.
Late Monday afternoon, word came from Mayor Alan Beach that the project is off the table, saying it does not keep with the character of downtown.
"Rest assured, I along with the rest of the Board will put the interest of this village and its residents first," he said.
Deputy Mayor Hilary Becker wonders what's next for the village following the cancellation.
"Until we get to the bottom of what's going on here, I feel the residents should really stay engaged with this situation and not let up," Becker says.
Monday night's Village Board meeting was packed with people opposed to the development. Residents say the mayor and Village Board did everything right and gathered all the facts before making a final decision.
News 12 spoke with developer Anthony Bartone, who says he's disappointed with the cancellation. He adds that he looks forward to working with the community and not being adversarial.
