Plunging temperatures didn’t stop Bronx children from plunging into fun at Bronx Park  local park Saturday as part of the fourth annual Fall Field Day hosted by the Department of Parks and Recreation.
The park was filled with arts and crafts and physical activities for all to enjoy as part of the annual effort to remind families of how they can keep children active in a positive way and off the streets.
First Deputy Parks Commissioner Liam Kavanaugh says that NYC Parks believes that park programming activates the community – increasing positive activities and making parks less susceptible to crime.
“First and foremost, we want to get them off the streets to do something creative,” says Darnell Hospedales, media education coordinator of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Bronx parent Kirsten Griffith says she is glad the park is getting some time in the spotlight: “The community really needs parks. Parks are a place where children get closer to their community. Parents meet other parents.”
A host of organizations also participated and introduced themselves to the community during the event, including the NYPD.
