New Jersey State Police say that a Burlington County woman kept 44 dead dogs inside freezers in her Shamong home.
Donna Roberts, 65, faces animal cruelty charges after the dogs were found in the home. Police say that 161 live dogs were recovered from the home.
Police say that health inspectors came to Roberts’ Oakshade Road home Tuesday and called police when they found the home reeking of feces and urine. Several of the responders reportedly became dizzy and nauseated, according to state police.
“We are appalled by the horrendous conditions these dogs were subjected to,” Burlington County Prosecutor Scott Coffina said in a statement. “I would like to commend the State Police for their professionalism and compassion, and thank the Burlington County Health Department and the many volunteers for the outpouring of support to provide for the care for these dogs.”
The dead dogs were found in plastic bags in various freezers inside Roberts’ home.
Police say that at least four of the living dogs are in critical condition and are receiving medical care.
Roberts was released from jail pending a court date.
