The family of Yadira Arroyo and her fellow EMTs left the Bronx Hall of Justice in frustration after an independent court-appointed psychologist requested three more weeks to evaluate Arroyo’s alleged killer.
Jose Gonzalez is accused of carjacking Arroyo’s ambulance and running her over with it in March 2017.
Gonzalez had been examined twice by doctors for the prosecution and the defense. The examinations resulted in opposite conclusions on Gonzalez's mental state. It not yet clear if he is mentally fit to stand trial.
Gonzalez was not in court Tuesday, waiving his right to appear. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 5, which is when the results of his psychological evaluation are expected to be released to a judge.
Arroyo’s family says the delays and postponements have become the hardest part of the court process.
“This man needs to be behind bars and we are going to make sure this happens,” says Rose Acevedo, Arroyo's aunt.
