Elementary school hosts Take a Vet to School Day

Posted: Updated:

As Veterans Day approaches, one local elementary school is making sure vets in their community know how much they are appreciated.

Columbus Elementary School in Thornwood is holding its fourth annual Take a Vet to School Day.

More than 50 veterans spent the day with students and staff and shared their experiences of their time in the service.  "I think it's very good for the younger generation to realize what we've all gone through, just to keep up the great country we are," says U.S. Navy veteran Dennis Cucinella.

Those involved say the experience is rewarding for both students and veterans. "They go through a lot to help our country, and they deserve to be honored, and for other people to know about what they did to make a country such a great place," says student Luke Gilbert.
