Reps. King, Suozzi: Let’s find common ground

Posted: Updated:
WOODBURY -

The much talked about "blue wave" was not a political tsunami, but it was large enough to hand Democrats control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

All five House incumbents on Long Island won their re-election bids.

Republican Rep. Peter King and Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi talked about bipartisanship before the election, during their campaigns, and now in the aftermath.

They said even though there is potential for gridlock, something will get done in Congress.

"If Democrats really want to do deals, I think the president is there, but he has to realize he can't get everything he wants, and Democrats have to realize that there has to be some common ground here," said King, who was re-elected to his 14th term on Tuesday.

Suozzi, who won his second term, said the new majority must provide oversight of the president while still working with Republicans to solve problems.

"I'm going to encourage my colleagues as much as possible to come together to solve the problems that people face," he said.

King and Suozzi admit the more extreme elements in both parties could be emboldened by the power shift. Suozzi says House Democrats even have to make sure they are able to work with all of the different elements within their own party now they are in control.
