The city Department of Transportation is putting a new crosswalk and pedestrian island at the intersection of Coney Island Avenue and Cortelyou Road in Kensington.
The DOT says the work is a direct response to community concerns.
A spokesperson says while there were zero fatalities between 2012 and 2016, there have been numerous injuries at the intersection.
People in the area told News 12 that pedestrians had often ignored a DOT sign at the intersection that advised people where to cross. They say that the new crosswalk and pedestrian island are long overdue.
The DOT says the project also includes upgrades to the turn signals.
