A Matawan teenager who helped prevent a fire last year in his home was honored Saturday with a special visit.

The Matawan Fire Company paid a visit to 15-year-old Kieran Wingler. Last September, Wingler became a sort of first responder on his own when a fan in his kitchen caught fire.

"He suddenly jumped up, I had no idea what he was doing," recalls his mom, Shea Murray. "He ran into the kitchen, he turned off the fan and unplugged it and opened the window before I even knew what was happening."

Wingler, who has autism and severe ADHD, sometimes has trouble with multistep instructions, according to his mom. She says his quick set of actions in the face of danger were huge for him.

On Saturday, Chief Ed Lee and members of the Matawan Fire Company stopped by with one of their trucks to say thanks.

Chief Lee says today's visit seves as a reminder of how important it is to speak with kids about fire safety.
