Bridgeport officials are making advances Wednesday in hope of making the city safer.

Mayor Joe Ganim signed a law that puts a $250 fine on the possession of a ghost gun.

Ghost guns are assembled from parts in a kit. Critics argue that the owners of these guns can avoid registration rules because the guns have no serial number, require no background check to purchase, and there isn't a way to track them.

The new fine will be included in gun laws that are already in place.

The law, which goes into effect today, does not affect 3D-printed guns.

Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez says these guns are being made in people's basements.

Officials say this is a safety and public health issue, and that people are dying because of the guns.

They hope a statewide ban passes next year.

Police have confiscated seven ghost guns this year in Bridgeport.
