Tuesday marked the second day of the 2018 New Jersey black bear hunt.
According to the state, 36 bears were killed Monday, two more than last year.
This year's hunt can only take place in a smaller area of the state after Gov. Phil Murphy banned the hunt on state land.
Those against the hunt, including the New Jersey Sierra Club, are frustrated with Gov. Murphy for failing to keep a campaign promise to ban the hunt altogether.
“We used to come out here and protest Gov. Christie, call these Gov. Christie's hunts,” says Jeff Tittel with the New Jersey Sierra Club. “This is now Phil Murphy's hunt, and so will the one in December, and so will the ones in the next few years if he doesn't change his policies and put a moratorium in place.”
Hunters also say that they are unhappy with this year's hunt. They say they aren't getting the access they signed up for when buying their permits due to Murphy's order banning hunting on state-owned land.
The hunt is bow-hunting only until Thursday, followed by muzzle-loading rifles until Saturday.
Another bear hunt is scheduled for December, during which firearms will be allowed.
