Federal officials claim a Brooklyn teacher with an extensive resume working in New York City schools used his position to prey on vulnerable children.
Jonathan Deutsch, who worked at Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences, was in federal court Tuesday accused on five counts of producing child pornography. He pleaded not guilty.
Sources say Deutsch was reassigned from the school in January.
Investigators say he contacted hundreds of children between the ages of 10 and 16 through Facebook using multiple accounts under names like Sam Morgan or Jay Stern. They say about 45 responded to him. Officials do not believe any of his students were involved.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York says he would tell the children he was a teacher to gain their trust. Then he requested images and video of various sexual acts.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the city’s Department of Education says: “These are extremely disturbing allegations, and Mr. Deutsch will remain reassigned away from students. We will seek his removal from payroll and termination as soon as legally possible."
Deutsch was represented by the Brooklyn Federal Defenders Office. News 12 reached out to his attorney for a comment, but did not hear back.
He's due back in court on Oct. 9.
Federal officials say there is an overwhelming amount of evidence in the case. He faces a mandatory minimum 15-year prison sentence if convicted on any of the five counts.
