Police: Hicksville group home resident assaulted officers with dumbbell
A group home resident in Hicksville was arrested Monday night after allegedly attacking Nassau police officers with a metal dumbbell.
Police say the incident started around 5 p.m. when Anthony Robinson, 58, punched another resident of the home in the head. When authorities showed up, police say Robinson struck an officer in the head with the 15-pound weight. According to court documents, that officer needed two staples to the back of his head.
Police say it took four officers to arrest Robinson and that they needed to use a Taser to do so.
According to court documents, Robinson admitted what he allegedly did to police officers saying, "I had an empty barbell in my hand. I got one or two decent shots in with the bar."
“They tried to de-escalate several times by giving verbal commands in an attempt so that he would put down the barbell,” said Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun. “He moved aggressively towards them, there was a wrestling match.”
Robinson’s roommate Gordon Willett told News 12 that Robinson is an ex-Marine and a schizophrenic who had recently gone off his medication. He says he warned Central Nassau Guidance and Counseling Services, a nonprofit organization that runs the home on West John Street, that Robinson was a danger.
“He could have snapped on anybody at any time, and he finally did,” said Willet.
Robinson was arraigned and held on $60,000 bond or $30,000 bail.
