There were crowds and increased security as President Donald Trump attended a Friday fundraiser in the Hamptons.
Supporters and protesters gathered on opposite street corners in Westhampton Beach to watch as Trump's motorcade left the gates of Francis S. Gabreski Airport. Protesters said they showed up to condemn the president's policies.
"This so-called president has been such a destructive, divisive, corrupt, racist essence in our politics," said Julie Sheehan, of East Quogue.
The pro-Trump crowd said they came out to make the president feel welcome on the South Fork.
"I wanted to show my support for the president," said Setauket's James Robitsek. "He's doing great. The country is better than it's ever been."
The commander in chief was on Long Island for a political fundraiser, bolstering his re-election campaign as well as down-ticket Republicans in races across the country. About 60 of Trump's supporters attended the Southampton luncheon. It was expected to raise about $3 million, according to the Republican National Committee.
Trump also met with the father of Christopher Raguso, a National Guard member from Commack who was killed in a helicopter crash in Iraq. His unit was based out of Gabreski Airport.
Security in Southampton was exceptionally tight during the visit. An army of police motorcycles led the way as roads were shut down throughout the area. Even mail delivery was put on hold for the day.
The president's plane took off from Gabreski Airport around 3 p.m.
Both sides acted peacefully, and there were no reports of violence.
Trump also on Friday met with Rep. Lee Zeldin, who was an early supporter of the president's 2016 campaign.
