Republicans are blasting New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo after he said that America “was never that great” during remarks criticizing President Donald Trump and his slogan, "Make America Great Again."
The Democratic governor made the comment on Wednesday at a bill signing event in Manhattan.
Cuomo said the Republican president wants to return to an era of greater sexism, racism and intolerance toward immigrants. He says America has made great strides toward equality, but that it can't consider itself great until there's full equality for all.
President Trump responded with a tweet Wednesday night that said, “Can you believe this is the Governor of the Highest Taxed State in the U.S., Andrew Cuomo, having a total meltdown!"
The New York Republican Party also expressed their outrage at the comment. The party purchased a one-way bus ticket for Cuomo to Canada.
The $55 Albany-to-Montreal ticket is valid only on Friday. Party leaders said that if Cuomo believes his own remarks, he should leave the country.
Cuomo's primary challenger, former "Sex and the City" star Cynthia Nixon, meanwhile knocked him for trying - and failing - to sound like a progressive.
The governor's allies say he was only acknowledging America's history of racism and inequality.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
