Former Connecticut Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz bested political newcomer Eva Bermudez Zimmerman in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor Tuesday.
Bermudez Zimmerman had said she hoped to pull off a surprise win over the political veteran Bysiewicz after a surprisingly strong performance early in the race.
She got 40 percent of the delegates at the Democratic state convention in May, just days after officially entering the running. Still, Bysiewicz earned the official endorsement of the Democratic Party.
Bermudez Zimmerman hoped to ride the wave of anti-establishment candidates. She's 31 years old, a union organizer and a former town council member of Newtown, her hometown. It was her first time running for statewide office — and her election would have made her the first Latina to hold statewide office in Connecticut.
