Long Island Rail Road commuters faced a frustrating evening rush Monday as mechanical trouble caused delays and cancellations on the Ronkonkoma line.
The LIRR warned customers to anticipate changes throughout the evening due to a switch problem in Central Islip. Many riders had to board buses on the brutally hot summer day.
Some eastbound trains were stopping at Farmingdale, where the MTA provided bus service. And westbound customers traveling from stations between Ronkonkoma and Wyandanch hitched bus rides to Farmingdale.
Many commuters had already endured a nightmarish morning commute when two separate fatal train accidents forced the suspension of service in both directions between Penn Station and Jamaica as well as between Hicksville and Ronkonkoma.
"It's unbearable. It really is," said rider Chris Hermanek, of Farmingdale. "It just seems that there's always something going on."
Some riders gave up on the LIRR altogether.
"We're going to take an Uber to the airport instead of waiting for another train and a bus," said Sue Greehy, of Port Jefferson Station.
Service disruptions were expected to continue through the evening. The LIRR said it would continue to message its customers with updates.
