Officials broke ground Thursday on the first being being renovated through the Vital Brooklyn initiative.

Part of the initiative is to use $3.1 million to improve 22 community gardens in Brooklyn. It's an effort to address what Gov. Andrew Cuomo calls chronic disparities in Central Brooklyn.

The entire initiative costs $1.4 billion and is funded through the state budget.

Vital Brooklyn aims to improve community-based health care and affordable housing, in addition to green spaces.

The plan is to have improvements at all 22 parks finished by 2019, but some gardeners say they don't know why their parks were left off the list.

For now, residents can look forward to seeing new, on-site water sources at all designated locations. Some will receive other upgrades such as new shade structures and raised flower beds.
