Dozens of people rallied outside a vacant lot in Baychester Thursday for new ideas for what could be built there.
The lot at 1825 East Gun Hill Road has sat empty for years.
Those who rallied said they don't want to see another mall come to the area and cause even more traffic congestion. They say they have plenty of ideas -- more retail is not among them. Some include a running track, low-income housing and basketball courts.
Last year, the community successfully shut down a proposal to build a shopping center on the site, which used to be a driving range for golf.
The property is owned by the city, which is leasing it to the MTA.
City Councilman Andy King says he received an email from the MTA about setting up meeting to hear the community's idea.
