The state Department of Transportation has extended by a week its public comment deadline for input on the proposed Bruckner-Sheridan Interchange project.

Officials say the goal is to reduce truck traffic in residential areas of Hunts Point with a $1 billion plan to build a more direct route to the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center, but critics say there may be better alternatives.

The current plan calls for building exit ramps off the Bruckner Expressway that would connect to Edgewater Road.

Community advocates say a better entry point may be at Oakpoint Avenue.

There are about 11,000 families living in the area, and for decades they have voiced concerns about truck traffic, air pollution and asthma rates around the country's largest produce market.

Advocates are encouraging more residents to weigh in before the extended deadline.
