NYPD to conduct internal disciplinary trial for death of Eric Garner

The NYPD has informed the Department of Justice that it is moving forward with internal disciplinary proceedings in the 2014 death of Eric Garner.
Daniel Pantaleo is the officer seen on video putting Garner into what appears to be a chokehold, ultimately leading to Garner's death.
Until now, the NYPD has been waiting to hear if the U.S. Department of Justice would be taking any action against the officers.
A letter to the DOJ says the NYPD will continue to hold off disciplinary proceedings if the DOJ has publicly announced intent to file criminal charges.
"The NYPD has come to the conclusion that given the extraordinary passage of time since the incident without a final decision on the U.S. DOJ's criminal investigation, any further delay in moving ahead with our own disciplinary proceedings can no longer been justified," the letter reads.
A DOJ spokesman said: "The New York Police Department may move forward with their disciplinary proceedings as they deem appropriate," adding that the letter from the NYPD has no bearing on the decision-making timeline at the DOJ.
News 12 reached out to the Civilian Complaint Review Board, an independent police oversight agency. It says it stands ready to prosecute Pantaleo as it does in cases in which the board substantiates misconduct. It plans to start disciplinary proceedings into the Pantaleo case by Sept. 1.
This comes just one day before the fourth anniversary of Garner's death.
