A Guatemalan family has been reunited following separation and detainment at the U.S. border, thanks to a Hudson Valley immigrant rights group.

Elvia Mendez and her son Eddy left Guatemala last November she says to escape her abusive ex-husband and violent country.

While running for their lives, ICE arrested them and placed them in a Texas prison. A month later, Mendez and her son were able to reunite with family in the Bronx.

Her daughter, Edith, tried to escape Guatemala two months ago with her older brother. The brother was deported back to his native country, and Edith was detained for 45 days alone in a Texas shelter.

Mendez reached out to The Hudson Valley Community Coalition. Luis Yumbla, who oversees the Westchester-based immigrant rights group, helped the family reunite.

The family is now settling in a studio apartment in the Bronx as the coalition is helping them seek asylum and eventually American citizenship.
