A 22-year-old recent college graduate is running for a state Senate seat.
Will Haskell is the Democratic nominee for the Senate's 26th District, which covers New Canaan and Westport. Haskell lives in the former and has his office set up in the latter.
Haskell says he's wanted to go into politics since age 12, adding that while people are curious about his age, it hasn't stopped him from attracting volunteers and getting enough donations to qualify for public financing.
"I got to meet a young senator named Barack Obama when I was just a little kid. That definitely sparked my interest in politics," Haskell says. "I never expected to be running for office at 22 years old. This was something that I decided to do in the wake of Donald Trump's election."
Haskell faces competition in the form of Republican incumbent state Sen. Toni Boucher, who first went to Hartford as representative in 1996 -- the same year her opponent was born.
