Speed cameras in the Bronx and across New York City are set to expire this month if lawmakers do not take action to renew them.

There are cameras at 140 school zones across the city, including some on the Grand Concourse.

The city’s Department of Transportation released a report last month with statistics saying speeding is a leading cause of fatal traffic crashes.

It tweeted a graphic showing that speeding has decreased by 83 percent due to the cameras, and serious injuries have lessened by 22 percent.

Many Bronx residents say they are in favor of extending the program, saying that the cameras can help protect children in the area as well as hold people accountable for speeding.

Despite the support, there are still many groups trying to get it banned.
