Suffolk police say three men were killed in a two-car crash early Sunday morning in Amityville.
It happened shortly before 1 a.m. at the intersection of Oak Street and Belmont Court.
Police say a BMW X5 driven by 27-year-old Alex Demetrius was headed east when the vehicle veered into a westbound lane and collided head-on with a Toyota Corrolla that was carrying two occupants.
Demetrius, of Nesconset, was killed. The driver of the Toyota, 65-year-old Joseph Cloonan, and his son, 34-year-old John Cloonan, both of Staten Island, were also killed.
Neighbors say they heard the sound of the horrific crash.
"We heard this insane boom, woke up, came outside and it was just chaos out there. One car, I feel like you couldn't tell it was a car anymore," says resident Erik Montalbano.
The speed limit in the area is 30 mph, but many people who live nearby tell News 12 drivers often go much faster.
"You can hear them winding their cars up... probably 45, 50, 60 mph," says Kirk Euson, of Amityville.
Police say both of the vehicles involved were impounded for a safety check, and their investigation is continuing. Anyone with information about the crash is being asked to call Suffolk's First Squad at 631-854-8152.
