About 300 additional NYPD officers will patrol the city's streets this week as part of the department's All Out program, an effort to increase safety throughout the summer.
There are nine New York City areas considered violent crime hotspots where more officers will hit the streets.
There are three in Brooklyn: the 67th, 73rd and 75th precincts.
NYPD leaders say the program led to large decreases in violent crimes and homicides last year over the year before -- by about 50 and 30 percent, respectively.
"We want every New Yorker to know they are safe," says NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan. "The NYPD is fully deployed and out there with them in their neighborhoods, on their blocks, doing everything we can to ensure we have a safe and enjoyable summer."
The extra officers will transfer in from administrative positions around the Big Apple. After a week of extra training, they will head out to the nine locations across the city.
Critics say officers with desk jobs shouldn't be sent to the streets. They argue those members of law enforcement may prove to be more of a liability than a help.
The NYPD's top brass say all members of the department are capable of serving -- and they note that the program has a track record of countering crime spikes in the summer months.
The program ends just after Labor Day.
