Holiday weekend getaway in full swing as gas prices rise

Thousands of New Jersey residents hit the road Friday morning to begin their Memorial Day weekend getaway – but it is going to cost them a little more this year.
The average price of regular unleaded gasoline hit $3.05 Friday, up from $2.97 a week ago, according to AAA. The price for regular gas this time last year was $2.40.
But the prices did not stop many from traveling as traffic built up around the state.
Drivers were reporting delays on many of New Jersey’s highways due to heavy volume of vehicles.
AAA says that nearly 42 million Americans will travel for the holiday, the most in more than 12 years. The agency says that traffic delays on major roadways across the country could be up to three times longer than normal.
Nearly 2 million more people are expected to travel by plane, train or other forms of transportation.
