City Council members are calling for reduced MetroCard rates for low-income New Yorkers.
Forty-seven of 51 council members support the initiative, which would provide half-priced MetroCards for people living at or below the poverty line. They are pushing funding for the initiative to be included in the 2019 fiscal year budget.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has disagreed with the proposition in the past, prompting City Council members to hand out pamphlets asking for residents' support.
The MTA announced last week that there would probably be a fare hike in 2019.
