NWS: At least 3 tornadoes hit CT during Tuesday storm

Posted: Updated:
SOUTHBURY -

At least three EF-1 tornadoes touched down in Connecticut during Tuesday's severe weather, the National Weather Service confirmed Thursday.

The NWS made the assessment that one traveled between Beacon Falls and Hamden with 110 mph winds, and the second moved from Southbury to Oxford with 100 mph winds.

Both tornadoes downed power lines and uprooted trees in their paths.

The NWS said a third struck Winsted in Litchfield County. It had winds up to 95 mph and a path that lasted less than a mile -- tearing up eight city blocks.

None of the tornadoes struck nearby Brookfield, which saw extensive storm damage. The NWS said a macroburst with winds around 100 mph blasted the town.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a macroburst is a powerful weather event that lasts 5 to 20 minutes at its peak and can cause tornado-like damage over a span of at least 2.5 miles.

The Red Cross has set up emergency shelters to give locals a place to cool off, eat and charge their cellphones.

Utility crews were working Thursday to try and restore power to tens of thousands of customers. Officials said some areas might not have the lights on until Saturday.
