Fire crews in Bridgeport battled flames at a home on Newfield Avenue.

News 12 Connecticut is told the fire broke out early Wednesday evening.

Firefighters responded quickly, but had to cut holes in the roof before getting the upper hand on the fire.

"At this time, it's not determined where there were smoke detectors in the structure or not, but our men responded quickly, they were able to effect a rescue and get the occupants out," says Battalion Chief James Cook.

The house will have to be inspected before the residents can return home.
