Excessive Heat WATCH in effect for:
Old Tappan Zee Bridge to become offshore reefsPosted: Updated:
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced on Tuesday that there will be new life for the old Tappan Zee Bridge when it is torn down.
Over 33 barges of material, including 40-foot-long sections of underwater pipe, as well as jetty rock and decommissioned tug boats, barges and scows, will be dumped into the waters off Long Island to create artificial reefs.
All materials will be cleaned and stripped of contaminants before deployment.
The structures will create new habitats for marine life. "This is just a win-win across the board. It helps the commercial fishing industry, the charter captains who have been suffering," says Cuomo.
The Department of Environmental Conservation will oversee the four month-long project.
