Opening statements were heard Tuesday in the trial of a Bethpage man accused of fatally stabbing his wife and attacking his teenage daughter.
Robert Crumb, 44, was charged with second-degree murder, assault and resisting arrest after the November 2016 incident. He is accused of killing his wife, Maria Crumb, in their Bethpage home – then stabbing his daughter Tiffany Crumb, who was attempting to help her mother, according to police.
Authorities say Crumb fled the scene and led police on a 25-mile chase that topped speeds of 100 mph.
Family members sobbed outside a Mineola courtroom just moments after listening to a 911 call from Crumb’s 12-year-old son. In the four-minute call, the boy is heard telling a 911 operator multiple times, "My dad stabbed my mom and my sister. Please hurry up."
Stephen Scaring, the attorney for Robert Crumb, called the 911 call “a very sympathetic tape.”
“This was a very emotional scene,” said Scaring.
Scaring also said that “there’s a big story to be told here, but it’s complicated.” He did not elaborate about what he meant.
The trial continues Wednesday.
