Go Green: Environmentally friendly work office

In the fourth installment of this year's Go Green series, News 12 Long Island's Elizabeth Hashagen visited Canon USA headquarters to check out ways to be more earth friendly at the office.
Canon USA headquarters in Melville is focusing on green goals, and it starts as soon as you park your car.
Electric cars have their own charging station. And they also offer some preferential parking spots for carpooling, low-emission vehicles and bike racks!
Over the past three years, Canon retrofitted the lighting in its offices, stairwells, and parking garage. The company says it now sees a savings of about 130,000 per year.
Water conservation was part of the important elements that came to being environmentally friendly within the building. So it chose special fixtures that save consumption by about 35 percent.
This year, Canon will have its 20th Earth Day celebration. Employees are invited to bring their electronic waste and books to recycle. Last year, they collected over 1,000 tons of e-waste.
The toner cartridge recycling program is huge! The program started in 1990 - Canon was the first major corporation to recycle toner cartridge. To date, the company has collected over 300,000 metric tons, keeping them out of landfills.
The company even has a Clean Earth Crew! It's been cleaning out local parks, and beaches for decades.
The section Generation Green of its website, provides tools and tips for customers on how to utilize its products in the most environmentally conscious ways. Tools and tips on how to save paper, save toner and save electricity - all of which lower costs and work more efficiently.
