Police ramp up efforts to make Stamford intersection safer

Posted: Updated:
STAMFORD -

Police in Stamford are cracking down on jaywalkers and trying to curb pedestrian deaths at one of the busiest intersections in the city.

Police say they gave 18 verbal warnings to pedestrians and three verbal warnings to drivers at the intersection of of Broad and Summer streets on Tuesday. In addition, officers handed out 50 $10 gift cards to pedestrians who pressed the crosswalk button and waited for the signal to cross.

"Unfortunately, we had seven motor vehicle fatalities in the city, three of which were pedestrians and that's in a city that did not even have any criminal homicides last year," says Tom Wuennemann, assistant police chief of the Stamford Police Department.

Police say people who jaywalk at busy intersections could get a ticket that ranges from $92 to $265.
