Bronx Councilman Andy King has announced his support for Mayor Bill de Blasio’s proposed expansion of the Speed Enforcement Camera program in the state budget.
The reformed program would authorize the addition of 150 speed cameras throughout the state and the redefinition of a school zone, It would also extend the program until 2022.
King says the enforcement will offer huge benefits to students and those who live near schools.
Four years ago, a 16-year-old student was struck and killed by a speeding driver near Baychester Avenue despite the installation of red light cameras, which did not capture the driver because the incident happened when those cameras weren't running.
King has since advocated for temporary 24-hour camera enforcement, arguing that people will not change their driving behaviors until it affects them financially.
