The mystery surrounding an urn containing ashes found along the Barnegat Bay may have been solved.
News 12 New Jersey first reported about the urn found by Berkeley Township resident Eileen Hunt’s husband last week.
It was initially believed that the urn was washed away from a home during Superstorm Sandy. But Hunt says that she has spoken to a woman who claims that the urn was stolen from her Toms River home in 1992 and that the urn contained the ashes of her dog.
“She said that she’s almost 100 percent sure it’s her first dog, Blue Boy, who was cremated in the…late 1980s,” Hunt says. “In 1992 she had a home invasion, everything was stolen. Somebody took the urn thinking it was worth some money.”
The supposed owner of the urn splits her time between homes in Tom River and Pennsylvania.
Berkeley Township police now have the urn and are investigating the claims.
