Town hall meeting held on closure of Rikers Island jail complex

Elected officials, neighborhood associations and criminal justice advocates are hosting a town hall meeting Thursday night regarding the closure of the Rikers Island jail complex.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council reached an agreement last month to replace Rikers Island with community-based facilities across the city.
According to the mayor's office, contractors are working to design the jails so that they best meet the needs of inmates, officers and the community.
There will be a single, public review process for the four proposed sites. They include building a new facility in the Bronx and repurposing existing facilities in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens.
Some Brooklyn residents say separate public review processes are necessary for each borough.
According to the city, the design phase in this process could begin as soon as next summer after community boards review the proposal.
