Bayonne High School students stage walkout to protest gun violence

Posted: Updated:
BAYONNE -

It's been one month since the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, where 17 students and teachers were killed.

All around the U.S. today, students took part in a walkout to protest gun violence.

Some 2,500 students are at Bayonne High School. The student government organized the program and it's supported by Superintendent Dr. Michael Wanko.

Administrators assisted by helping the students get dismissed by sections and brought to the field.

Some 600 seniors were on the field presenting safety as the primary focus.

Students then returned to the building after the program.

Anyone who didn't take part in the program stayed in the auditorium.

Additional security measures were taken since last week, a 13-year-old was arrested for making threats against the school on social media.

In a letter sent to parents Monday by the superintendent, it was revealed the school district placed an order for 13 walk-through metal detectors and 12 portable wands.

The walk-through detectors will be installed, one for each of the elementary schools and two in the high school.

It is all an effort to keep the schools safe and secure learning environment for the students.
