Wilton students prepare for Wednesday's school walkout

Posted: Updated:
WILTON -

Students in schools across the state and the nation are walking out of class on Wednesday to stand in solidarity with the victims of the Parkland, Florida school shooting.

Organizers at Wilton High School say they are expecting hundreds of students, and even a few teachers, to participate.

Senior Emily Kesselman says she told administrators about her plan for the walkout and that they were supportive.

"They've guaranteed that no student will be expelled, suspended or even marked absent for it," Kesselman says.

She says this is not a political demonstration, it is a human one.

"We want it to be nonpartisan, so people feel comfortable participating," says Kesselman. "Not only for their own reasons, but being part of a larger picture that's projected to the world of Wilton High School."

During the demonstration, students will say the names of the Florida victims and read a short bio for each of them.

Kesselman says her organization Connecticut Teens Against Gun Violence will also hold a meeting Wednesday evening to discuss gun legislation and write letters of support to the students and teachers in Parkland.
