Hospital follows strict protocol in response to flu outbreak

Brookdale Hospital is taking preventative actions to protect staff and patients in response to this season's flu outbreak.
The hospital's pediatric emergency room has been packed with flu patients this year. Dr. Sandra Scott, the chair of emergency medicine, says the hospital is prepared to handle the crowd, starting with staff.
She describes a strict protocol for employees that includes washing and disinfecting their hands before and after they put on their gloves. Getting the flu shot is also mandatory. Employees who cannot get a flu shot must wear a mask, and any health care provider who gets the flu will not be at work.
Scott says the elderly and children are at a higher risk for the flu, as well as people with certain health conditions like asthma and diabetes.
