Gov. Phil Murphy wants to reassure parents that their children are safe in New Jersey schools.

With the shooting death of 17 in Parkland, Florida still fresh in parents minds, state leaders are responding with proposals like putting more police in schools and enhanced community policing.

New Jersey State Police Superintendent Pat Callahan said that there would be an added emphasis on having parents, faculty members and students interact with state troopers.

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the sate can’t miss the types of warning signs exhibited by suspected Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz. 

“The stakes are just too high,” Grewal said.

In New Jersey, the governor expects to see bills on his desk soon that have been passed over in recent years, including legislation banning armor piercing bullets and requiring mental health checks on gun buyers.

Murphy also added that he wants to form a coalition of regional states to keep out-of-state guns from reaching New Jersey.
