School officials released Norwalk High School students early Tuesday after issuing a shelter-in-place order in response to a possible weapon.

Police say a student reported hearing someone pull the slide back on a handgun in the men's restroom. 

The district also tweeted that after-school activities and evening programs were canceled for the day. 

Norwalk police said that everyone was safe during the shelter period, but no one was allowed to enter or leave campus.

The district provided buses for students and asked parents who were coming to pick up their kids to do so at the neighboring American Legion hall on County Street.

Norwalk Police Lt. Terry Blake said 15 to 20 officers arrived after the district urged students and faculty to shelter in place over reports of a possible weapon.

Police did not find any weapons and say there weren't any threats made. They say no arrests have been made and that none are expected.

Norwalk High School was scheduled to start at its normal time Wednesday.
